History of GDPA

Our Legacy Our Story

The Georgia Dermatology Professional Association (GDPA) holds a distinguished place in medical history as the first state chapter of dermatology PAs in the country and one of the first PA specialty groups in Georgia.

Founding & Early Years (2002–2008)

The organization was born in April 2002 when a group of Atlanta-area dermatology PAs recognized the need for a statewide network. Douglas DiRuggiero, PA-C, was elected as the inaugural President, leading the GDPA through its formative years. During this era, the association established its legacy of physician collaboration through the annual Collaborating Physician Appreciation Dinner and the Physician of the Year award.

Growth & National Affiliation (2009–2010)

The GDPA reached several major milestones during this period:

  • Non-Profit Status: Officially incorporated in Georgia in 2009 and achieved IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 2010.

  • National Recognition: On March 14, 2010, the GDPA became an official Affiliate State Chapter of the Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA).

  • Educational Excellence: After co-hosting its first CME conference in 2009, the GDPA launched its signature Annual Dermatology PEARLS Conference in 2010, which has remained a premier fall event ever since.

Innovation & Modernization (2018–Present)

The GDPA has consistently evolved to meet the needs of its growing membership:

  • 2018: Launched popular networking and social events to foster peer-to-peer connection.

  • 2020: Successfully transitioned the PEARLS conference to a virtual format during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure uninterrupted clinical education.

  • 2025: In a landmark move to reflect the modern dermatology workforce, Fellow Members voted to rename the organization the Georgia Dermatology Professional Association.

Our Legacy & Future

While we have expanded to become a more inclusive organization representing both PAs and NPs across Georgia, the GDPA remains committed to its roots. We continue to honor our legacy as a PA-founded and PA-led organization dedicated to leadership, innovation, and the highest standards of dermatologic care.
